Red Spice Road is a perfect example of Asian community dining. The restaurant, located in QV is a lot bigger than the original sister branch at McKillop Street – catering to large group of diners and walk ins.
One of their best kept secret is the Express Banquet Lunch – an absolute bargain and available through weekdays and weekend. For $25 p.p, you get a 3-course main plus appetiser or 5-course main plus appetiser for $30 p.p. Oh, and did I mention that the menu changes seasonally ?
At one time, I was craving for pork belly that I tried to replicate their famed Pork belly with apple slaw recipe. The result was not as delicious as the original :( So, here I was, coming back for more of that super tasty pork belly that I couldn’t get my mind off.
We had Betel leaf with snapper as entree but I find the snapper mash a little wet. If the texture can be a little more dry, it would be just perfect. As for mains, we enjoyed both the Chicken fried with chilli, basil and snake beans and the Slow cooked beef curry. The flavours were nicely spiced with fragrant asian aroma and tasted good without overpowering the meats.
But the main hero has always been the wondrously delicious Pork belly with apple slaw. It was the highlight dish of the day! According to the recipe, the pork belly was firstly braised in master stock and then chilled overnight. When chilled completely, the pork is then cut into large pieces and lastly fried. The outcome? Beautiful crisp and crunch around the outer layer and tender melt in mouth pork belly meat. Its colourful slaw added much freshness and texture to the dish. And oh, the sauce is to die for – goes really wild with steamed rice!
Verdict : Red Spice Road puts a modern and fun twist on traditional Thai cuisine and its casual street food charm. Their menu is strongly influenced by Asian spices and cooking methods to be enjoyed by large group of diners. The hero menu, pork belly dish is definitely one of the best I have eaten (my other favourite pork belly dishes are from Taxi Dining Room and Chin Chin) and will keep me coming back for more.
