Burch & Purchese – South Yarra
Sweets Heaven! Walking into B&P Sweet Shop is like walking into a Sweets porn shop. Most display items on the table is edible (well except for the jars, glasses and papers). So, tell me, what’s not to “Ooh” and “Aah” here?
B&P only do takeaways although I wouldn’t mind having a long afternoon tea and be served with the wide array of desserts, cakes, ice cream or anything displayed in the shop. Behind these stunning creations is owner/chef Darren Purchese whose displayed artworks are to be admired as they are visually stunning and delicious when eaten – now you know where the “Oohs” and the “Aahs” come from :)
Combining delicious components like jellies, mousse, ice cream, chocolates to create artwork of sweets that are fun, playful and adventurous is what B&P does best. There are so many cakes and tube desserts (cute!) to choose from that I don’t even know where to start … Aargh! The word of the day is Greed + Indecisive = Gluttony :(
I rapidly filled the box with 3 desserts and 2 cakes – priced $9 each – a little on the high side. Names are so long that they even have to include cake labels in the box which clearly lists the ingredients by layer. Some of the layer description takes up to 5 lines and if you don’t know what I mean, here’s the introduction:
(Left) Dessert 1 – Raspberry, White Choc, Honey, Lychee (White chocolate & raspberry mousse / honey & lychee jelly / muesli & honey oat sponge / raspberry compote / fresh lychees / exaggerated raspberry cream / honey & lychee syrup / white chocolate velvet spray (Middle) Dessert 2 – Coconut, Passionfruit, Ginger, Mint (Coconut mousse / passionfruit curd / coconut caviar / passionfruit jelly / salted oat & ginger crumble / ginger marshmallow / white chocolate mint wafer / brilliant white chocolate spray (Right) Dessert 3 – Gin & Tonic (Gin & tonic jelly / juniper berry crumb / lime curd / gin caviar / lime jelly / lime & white chocolate mousse)
I love the Raspberry, White Choc, Honey, Lychee with half mound white chocolate & raspberry mousse. Nice all round texture and surprisingly not too sweet either. Each ingredient is tastefully represented, but the honey seems to have lost in there somewhere, yet, it is enough for me to indulge.
(Top) Cake 2 – Chocolate, Mandarin, Salted Caramel (Kendari 60% chocolate mousse / murray river salted caramel / burnt mandarin cream / st clements marmalade / aerated chocolate shortbread / chocolate mirror glaze (Bottom) Cake 2 – Green Tea, Pistachio, Cassis, White Chocolate (Pistachio frangipane / cassis jelly / green tea meringue / pistachio cream / vanilla & white chocolate mousse / cassis curd / chocolate velvet spray / green tea sponge)
My favourite would have to be the Green tea, Pistachio, Cassis, White chocolate cake. The mousse is super duper smooth, light and airy – melting in mouth. The flavours are subtly presented throughout the layers inside the cake so you can actually taste the multiple flavours that has been put together. Yummy!
Verdict : Don’t just stand there, grab your forks and indulge!

Tip : Open your mind – try the unconventional desserts and cakes and you will be surprised by your taste buds.
