A hidden gem located behind Southbank – Melbourne’s busiest dining and entertainment hub.

Downstairs offers a relaxed drinks to dining atmosphere with simple elegance.  The space is complemented with a fine lounge area (it has a warm fireplace too!), a nice long bar, spacious dining room extending to outside terraces.

Sea scallops, cauliflower puree with truffle salsa - $14

The menu is simple – with choices for entree and “larger plates”.  There are also pizza and pasta for the easy breezy diners.  I was immediately attracted to the scallops – I love scallops!  When seared perfectly, scallops keep its wonderful flavors and with one bite – the flavors burst right into your mouth…And that’s what this dish delivers!  The cauliflower puree adds texture to the dish. Love it!

Master stock braised pork belly, fragrant herb salad with palm sugar caramel - $15

My hubby decided to go for the pork belly.  We love pork belly – “the kind that melts in your mouth” pork belly.  This was cooked to perfection – crispy on the outside and juicy inside.  I can not get over how good this plate tasted.

Grain-fed duck breast, potato leek puree, ratatouille and blood orange jus – $30

For mains, hubby went for duck breast.  The plating looks awesome.  The first thing that came to our mind was if the breast is overcooked, the meat will be dry.  So, when we tasted the duck, it was cooked to perfection.   The blood orange jus truly complemented the dish and brings out the flavor of the duck.

I love my steak medium rare – that is, blood red at the center of the steak when cut.  The steak’s a killer! Green beans and mushroom was great accompaniment to the steak and the jus – I would love to have more of it!  I kept the potato as the last to savor – the many thin layers of the potato that was seasoned with black pepper was to die for!

Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla Ice Cream

Who doesn’t love Chocolate Fondant?  You’ll not go wrong with this dessert.  We picked up our forks and started to half the fondant to see the dark chocolate oozing out of its little cave.  Beauty!

Overall, we had a great dining experience at Downstairs Bistro & Lounge  - wonderful food, great service and a nice ambience.  We will be back definitely to try the rest of the menu.
